Is a Small Business the Answer to a Big Problem?

Is it possible for a small business to actually make a lot of money? Is it really possible? Maybe that's the type of question that is going through your mind right now if you're currently stuck in a dead-end job you hate, earning a salary you detest and have to engage in constant head-butting sessions with colleagues and bosses all the time. Is starting a small business really the answer?

Starting a Small Business is Like Having a New Baby

Before you throw your resignation into your boss' face tomorrow morning, let's examine the intricate details involved in starting an small business. Have you got enough cash or savings to carry you through the tough initial months after starting your own small business - you could start from home and that would save you cost. But remember, even if the cost of maintaining your business is low, you would still have to consider daily expenses of your family members.

You need to also feed your business too - monthly bills like phone, water, electricity, Internet connection, web hosting, web designer, writers, suppliers....etc. They all eat into your savings. This new baby of yours may take up a lot of your time and a lot of your money too - and like kids, the amount grows with time.

So, be prepared for this new small business baby of yours to eat off of you during the difficult months. If you DON'T have the savings to keep you alive for at least 3 months, then you should reconsider your decision. Start saving now.

Small Business Needs Promotion and Advertising Too

Client don't just line up to give your small business a chance. You need to do some advertising, some promotional work, networking and perhaps some begging too! It's inevitable. And most of these cost a fair bit of money too, except for begging. The scale of your promotions and advertising could be peanuts compared to what those huge INTERNATIONAL companies are doing - you're not doing a worldwide promotional event. You're just trying to reach some people around the area where you live, right? And why should that be difficult?

Well, consider this. People don't always trust small business owners. Yup, that's absolutely so true. They think small businesses are here to stay...for a day and then fly by night. They think small businesses won't survive long enough to complete their projects on time.

So, you will need some sort of promotion and advertising to convince them that you're for real - like a real serious looking business card and some awesome brochures and flyers to leave with your potential clients. Networking often means you have to go out and meet people too and find the opportunity to talk to them about your new small business. Going out equals expenditure. Are you prepared to do that and are you financially capable of handling the potentially bank-account-crippling expenses?
