Work at Home with no Day Care?

Okay, so you've made the leap from normal corporate life to work at home mom and are loving it. There is just one tiny problem: the kids. You became a work at home mom to be with them, but you've realized it is almost impossible to get any work done while they are moping around your office whining that they want juice or to watch Blues Clues. And the baby is crying for a diaper change. And don't forget the dishes molding in the sink. And the massive pile of dirty clothes in the laundry room.

Ahh! !

So what is a desperate mommy with ton of work waiting supposed to do?

Have no fear! These tips will take your hands away from pulling your hair out and onto the keyboard in no time.

The Built-in Work at Home Day Care

You need to be able to keep an eye on that little one every second, but how do you do that while typing at the computer? Easy, just make your own work at home day care right in your office (or the room you use for an office).

Pick a corner of the room that is far enough away from your desk that you can concentrate but close enough to see when you tilt your head a little. Fill this area with toys, books, crayons and a coloring book (if they are old enough), bean bag chair or other comfy kid-sized seat and a TV with VCR.

I'm not saying that you should let the TV baby sit while you work, but they're going to demand to watch Dora the Explorer anyway. You might as well have them where you can see them. Plus, in that blessed thirty minuets you can get a lot of work done!

Also keep snacks like juice boxes, grapes, goldfish crackers and other healthy snacks close to your desk so you don't have to get up when the tummies start grumbling.

Teach you toddler or preschooler that when mommy is on the phone it is quiet time. It may also be a good idea to give your child a toy phone, so that they can pretend they a doing business, too.

Remember, since you are a work at home mom you can also do your business at night, after the kids are asleep, just as long as you don't have to make any phone calls.

Work at Home Even with a Baby

The key to working at home with a baby is to work your schedule around the baby's schedule. Make phone calls while the baby nurses or drinks a bottle. Do keyboard work while the baby naps. Check emails with the baby is doing tummy play on a blanket next to your desk.

Just remember not to leave the baby alone. If the phone rings while you are giving the baby a bath or changing a diaper, let the answering machine get it and call back latter.
