Starting More Than One Home Business is Spreading Yourself to Thin

I have known so many entrepreneurs who know that they want a home business but can not decide on what type of business that they want. These people have jumped from one home business to another home business like a flea amongst a pack of dogs. Never staying with any one business long enough, or making enough of an effort at it, to find out if it would work for them. These people may be selling vitamins when I talk to them on Monday, but marketing long distance phone service by the time I see them again on Friday.

Other entrepreneurs that I know take a more "global" approach to their home business. They do not jump from business to business, but rather they start 3, 4 or more home businesses all within a short period of time. Giving a little bit of effort to a lot of different ventures, in hopes that one will show promise over the others.

The problem with both of these approaches is they just don't work. To make a home business successful you need to be fully committed to that home business - 120%. You can't be if you have more than one "ball up in the air"

But I Can Handle More Than One Home Business...at Least for Now.

I can understand this approach to home business, because I too have fallen prey to the onslaught of home business opportunities that we are met with each day. Each one sounding a little bit better than the last. There are so many home business opportunities (some legitimate, some scams) that it takes real personal discipline to avoid the urge to try them all!

It is tempting to fall into the mentally that "if I throw enough against the wall something has got to stick" But at least during the first year or two of a home business it is really important to stay focused on one business and do your best to give it what it needs to succeed.

Some will argue that they are afraid to "keep all of their eggs in one basket" again I can understand this fear. However, diversification is great, but not until after your home business is well established. A premature attempt at diversification will most likely lead to a loss of focus and actually hinder the growth of your home business.

But How do I Choose Just One Home Business?

Research! Research! Research! You shouldn't choose to start every home business that you run into, but that does not mean that you can not research and investigate each one that you find!

Learn more about the business and how it run. See if you can find someone who is operating that type of a home business and talk to them. Try to talk to customers of a similar home business and see how they feel about that business.

Choosing the home business that is right for you is often a process of elimination. By ruling out home businesses that you know you do not want to do, you will narrow down the rest from which to choose.
