Angling
Mark
Doonaha is situated about
half way between Carrigaholt and Poulnasherry Bay. There is a
cove immediately south of Doonaha and access to the beach is via
a series of concrete steps. The beach is approximately 250 yards
long at low water and is interspersed with rocky patches. Bottom
fishing on the flood tide produces bull huss to 8lbs, dogfish,
three bearded rockling, plaice and flounder. Mackerel and lugworm
are the best baits and the optimum period is from half flood to
high water.
Bait
Bait can be
obtained from at Doonaha where there is a cove immediately to the
south and access to the beach is via a series of concrete steps.
Lugworm can be dug on the left hand side of the beach from low
water and the first two hours of the flood tide. Also Carrigaholt
Pier which is situated 0.5 km on the eastern side of Carrigaholt
village is a good location for bait. Access here is easy and
there is parking on the side of the road near the main slipway.
Soft and peeler crab can be collected both here and and among the
rocks adjacent to the pier. Some lugworm and small ragworm can be
dug in the sandy patches beside the inner pier. Also at Querrin
Pier which is approximately 3 kms on the western side of
Poulnasherry Bay can provide lugworm in the sandy/muddy channel
beside the pier. The lug beds are confined to a small area on
either side of the channel. Some soft peeler crab can be
collected under the weed to the right of the small pier. There is
no problem with access and parking is adjacent to the pier.
