Essentials Needed to Work at Home

If you've decided that you'd like to work at home there are certain changes you may have to make to help you be successful. After all, just because it's your home doesn't mean it shouldn't have a professional atmosphere conducive to work. Creating a functional workspace is the most important step anyone who wants to work at home can take. Working in a cluttered, cramped, dimly lit area is not going to help you reach the level of production you need to make your business thrive.

Don't underestimate the power furniture and a coat of paint can have to transform a dull uninspired space into a stimulating work zone.

Good Work at Home Furniture

How much you have to spend to transform you home is dependent on your budget, your needs, and your desire to invest in your home office. Some important issues to consider:

o Lighting- Task lighting can be an eye saver if your work will require a lot of reading or studying objects intensely. Desk lamps come in all shapes and sizes, so it won't be difficult to find an inexpensive lamp that suits your needs.

o Storage- No matter how much room you think you'll need for storage, count on needing more, maybe not right away, but probably in the near future. Desk drawers, filing cabinets, and bulletin boards are all traditional ways to store necessary items and files but also consider bookshelves and storage cabinets for additional space.

o Comfort- Your computer chair may be the most crucial piece of furniture to your office and your health. Find one that's comfortable and supportive. If you decide to purchase a computer desk make sure it is tall enough for you to sit properly without having to hunch over. Also be sure the surface is wide enough so that you don't have the computer monitor too close to your face.

o Camouflage-If the room is to be used for other purposes, like a guest room, think about getting a computer armoire or other stylish means of storage. A good file system and a commitment to organization will keep the room neat and orderly for all occasions.

Add Color When You Work at Home

Even though it's in the comfort of your own house, you still need motivation when you work at home. Wall color can have a surprisingly strong effect on your outlook. Choose a paint color you like, but be sure it will work well with the room. A small space will be made even smaller by dark color, whereas lighter colors can seem to make an area expand.

Red may be a bold, daring choice but it could also bring about feelings of hostility and stress, the last thing you want to experience when you work at home. Green is a passive color that promotes balance and may be more suitable to your space. Hundreds of studies have been conducted to determine what effect colors have on human beings. The results are easy to find on the internet.

Remember, paint will most likely look differently in your room than the paint chip did in the store under the fluorescent lights. Paint will also usually dry lighter than the paint chip shows.
