Turn Job Loss into Business Opportunity

Unemployment Can be a Great Business Opportunity
It's difficult to find anything positive about losing a job, but it could be turned into an advantageous business opportunity. With so many companies down-sizing or sending jobs out of the country, hard working people are losing jobs. Even highly skilled workers with years of experience are subject to unemployment through no fault of their own. Though these workers may have never considered being their own boss before, taking the business opportunity that presents itself may make them wonder why they didn't start their own business sooner.
Business Opportunity in Disguise?
It may take weeks for you to be able to mentally and emotionally prepare yourself to move on after your job loss. Give yourself the time you need to recover from this huge life changing event before you make any rash decisions.
After the shock of being let go has worn off examine your situation. Assess your skills and experience, searching honestly for strengths that can be magnified and weaknesses that can be remedied. Also take note of the climate of your particular field. Was it problems with your company that lead to your dismissal or has your entire profession taken a hit?
From there, consider how happy you were in that field. Did you find the work enjoyable or did it just pay the bills? Did you stay in the job because you found it fulfilling or because it was all you knew? Did you like working for others or, if given the opportunity, would you prefer to start your own business?
If you find yourself leaning toward business ownership, take the opportunity you've been given, and research it. Surf the web or head over to the library and read as much as you can about business start ups. It may be that starting your own business may be hard work, but it's probably not impossible.
Prepare for a New Business Opportunity Through Education
Most workers, especially those in industry, who lose their jobs are only skilled in one area. Many community colleges offer worker retraining programs that will teach new skills to get the unemployed back into the workforce. Normally, however the retraining is for an entirely different position than the one previously held. For some, the new direction is a welcome change. For others who were happy with their career, this can be disheartening.
But, upon looking at the course listings, workers can see that going back to school may get them ready for a new business opportunity: business ownership. Classes like accounting, marketing, business management, or those that deal with specific computer software can prepare them for the challenges of starting their own company. Many schools offer some kind of tuition assistance for those who can prove that they've lost their job through no fault of their own.
Whether one combines his or her trade with newly gained education or takes the opportunity to try completely different, the information learned through course work will come in handy at the start of the new business opportunity.
