Why a Home Business is Different

A home business can become, for the home business owner, an entity in and of itself. Very often the home business owner spends more time with their business than with anyone or anything else.

Because so many hours and so much hard work, blood, sweat and tears goes into building and operating a home business, it is easy to view it as having a "life" or an "entity" of its own. A home based business can become more real to the business owner than anything else in their lives.

However, there can also be a down side to a home based business, especially one that is failing. Part of being successful within a work-at-home dream also means knowing when it is time to quit.

Simply put, A home business can be viewed like a game of cards, when the losses exceed the wins, it may be time to give up on the home business and either start another home business, or look into other forms of employment.

Studies have found that most entrepreneurs fail three - five times, before they start a business which succeeds. Although it is necessary for an home business owner to be persistent. Refusal to accept failure can be very detrimental.

How to Know When it is Time to Let Your Home Business Go

Basically, to decide if it is time to close down your home business, you will need to measure the amount of suffering it is causing. The following things should be taken into consideration.

How much debt are you accruing? How many bills and family needs are being neglected? No one should live without food, clothing, shelter or medical care. If a home based business is constantly leaving the business owner without the money needed to cover these expenses, then it is probably time to go out of business.

What type of Emotional Pain is the Home Business Causing? If life has become too stressful because of mounting debt and a failing home business, then it is probably time to go out of business.

If the frustration of handling the business has become greater than the pleasure gotten from running the home business, then it is probably time to go out of business.

But What If You do Not Want to Give up on Your Home Business?

Notice I said that it is probably time to go out of business. However, no one can make that determination but the business owner. Let's face it, all businesses go through rough times and many recover. If you do not feel you want to go out of business there are other options.

There are some things you can do alleviate some of the financial and emotional stress that accompanies a failing business:

An outside source of employment can be taken temporarily - preferably on a part time basis, and the business owner can continue to run the business in their free time. The business can be downsized, if necessary, to make this possible.

Loans and grants can be sought to alleviate financial strains until the business recovers from the down time and becomes solvent again. Just be careful with this option - because you could still end up going out of business, but with a lot of money to pay back!
