The Image of Your Home Based Business
One of the most important aspects of marketing the services of any home based business is the image that business projects. Think about major corporations in the world today, like Coca-Cola, Home Depot, and Ford. Each of these companies has spent hours upon hours and dollars upon dollars deciding what type of image they would like to project, based on what type of target audience they are after. Coca-cola is after an all-American image, and so their marketing reflects that.
Similarly, you must decide who will be your largest targeted consumer of whatever goods or services you provide, and then you must create an image that will be especially attractive to this target audience. The best way to begin is to decide what niche your business fills, what is special about your business that sets it apart from the competitors, what is your mission and/or philosophy of business?
These questions will get you thinking along the right lines, and once you have identified the image you would like to project, make sure that all of your marketing materials, from business cards to logos to labels, stays in line with that image.
The Legal Aspects of Your Home Based Business
As you begin to set up your home based business, you will need to determine which type of legal entity it will be: sole proprietor, partnership, corporation, S corporation, or limited liability corporation. Depending on what goods and services you will be offering, certain of these legal entities will be more tax advantageous for you than others. The best thing to do is to consult with an attorney or an accountant.
In addition to the structure of your home based business, you may also need to have other legal documents completed, including permits, business licenses, employer identification number, or sales tax certifications. The best thing to do for these is to consult with state and local authorities, who typically have packets for new businesses that detail exactly what types of legal documents are required to legally operate a home based business.
The Destiny of Your Home Based Business
As you begin to set up your home based business, you will need to spend some time pondering all the scenarios of success and determine where you want your home business to go in the future. Too many times, small business owners do not plan for the surprising and seemingly happy contingent of growth, and end up overwhelmed and out of business. Decide the possibilities of growth for your business: is it likely to grow into a statewide, nationwide, or international corporation?
If so, how fast do you want the growth to be? Remember that the slower the growth, the steadier and more permanent it is as well. Set some goals for the company, including a timetable of growth, and the resulting consequences that will need to be dealt with, such as a need for additional employees, a bigger building, or more warehousing space. Plan for the contingency of enormous success!
