Briefing on French Bank Settlement Talks

Talks to facilitate settlement of lawsuits against French banks for Nazi-era activities are being held at the State Department January 17-18. They are being facilitated by Treasury Deputy Secretary Stuart Eizenstat, the President and Secretary of State's Special Representative for Holocaust Issues. The French delegation is led by Ambassador Jacques Andréani and includes government and bank representatives. The victims' side is represented by plaintiffs' attorneys involved in the lawsuits.

These talks were launched in Washington in December 2000. The participants are seeking to reach final agreement to compensate Holocaust survivors and heirs of those who did not survive for French bank account losses.

Mr. Eizenstat will hold a briefing for the media at the conclusion of the current round of talks on Thursday, January 18, at 3 p.m. The briefing will take place in the Loy Henderson Room on the first floor of the State Department. Reporters wishing to attend the briefing should come to the State Department's 23rd Street entrance no later than 2:45 p.m. Set up for cameras is at 2:30 p.m. For more information, please contact Peter Becskehazy or Philip Frayne at (202) 647-6925.
