Environmental Management Division
(EMD, or Code JE): Sustainability

NASA's Environmental Management Division (EMD) is a unit (Code JE) of the Office of the Assistant Administrator for Management Systems (Code J). The EMD serves as Agency lead in assuring that NASA meets its Federal stewardship responsibilities by applying principles of sustainability while carrying out its primary mission of:
- understanding and protecting our home planet,
- exploring the Universe and searching for life, and
- inspiring the next generation of explorers.

In its most general sense, sustainability means using resources to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs (World Commission on Environment and Development, Our Common Future, 1986).
