So What's an MLM Business Opportunity?
MLM stands for multi-level marketing - a business opportunity that's been around for decades. It has gotten a bad reputation, sometimes undeservedly. Yes, there have been fraudulent MLM's, just as there have been fraudulent firms of many other types as well. When folks talk disparagingly about MLM's they're really talking about pyramid schemes.
Let's look at the difference.
In a pyramid scheme, the only source of revenue is the money that is made by convincing others to come onboard and acquire revenue by convincing others to come onboard. Revenue is generated solely by sale of training tools or manuals, buy-in fees, etc. There really is no other product.
In an MLM, however, there is a product or service for sale. Folks who have their own MLM business opportunity business acquire money in two ways - bringing folks in under them to have their own MLM business opportunity, and by selling the company product or service.
Some Good MLM to Consider As Your Business Opportunity
There are some very well known, reputable business opportunities to consider. Amway is one; Prepaid Legal Services another. Cutco is also a multi-level marketing company.
Let's take a look at how Amway works. This business opportunity starts when you are sponsored by an Amway representative. You then purchase the Amway starter kit - with instructions and products. You then make a list of potential customers. As you talk to folks about the product you're also telling them about the business. Should they decide to join Amway you will reap financial rewards from bringing them into the Amway fold. Then they start to sponsor others. And you earn money from those folks as well.
So, What's the Problem with This Type of Business Opportunity?
While Amway has a sterling reputation for high-quality products, the drawback for this, as for any MLM, is that this business opportunity is dependent on your calling on friends, family members and other personal acquaintances to generate sales. The first thing they want you to do is ask your mom to buy Amway products. Then you're approaching your brother and your co-worker about it as well.
Then, once they've bought something - perhaps out of obligation - you're now offering them a great business opportunity of their own. The opportunity is their own Amway business, which, of course, they realize is about making you money. They know how multi-level marketing works.
While a reputable product from a well-thought-of company is an advantage to trying out your own untested new idea, you have to ask yourself one question. Before becoming a multi-level marketer, you have to determine if you can and if you want to use your personal relationship so transparently.
If you can't ask mom to buy your Cutco knives without feeling like she did so just because you're her son and now resents you for it; if you can't tell good old Uncle Joe how great a money maker his Prepaid Legal Service company would be for him and really believe that it's true - then you shouldn't be in multi-level marketing.
