The Shopping Cart, the Ecommerce Software That Jump Starts Your Business

The shopping cart is the hub of activity at your online store, by using eCommerce software that is right for you, you can make your customers' shopping experience hassle free.

Next time you go into a large store, take a look around. Where is the first place people go before picking up items to purchase? If the store you are in is large enough, shopping carts are waiting for customers right at the front of the store. Shoppers will grab a cart and take it with them throughout the store, piling items inside the cart before they ever make it to the check out stand. There's nothing worse than a shopping cart that is too small, or too old, or one that has a flat tire.

This is a good metaphor for the shopping carts and shopping baskets that shoppers use every day the world over in online shopping stores. The cart is part of the shopping experience and has become so common place that shoppers rarely give any thought to their availability or functionality.

Imagine going into a grocery store that doesn't have shopping carts. You are likely to purchase much less there, right? If you try several carts and they are all broken or dysfunctional, you are likely to get frustrated and walk out. The same thing happens to web business owners who don't pay careful attention to the eCommerce software they use online.

How Does Ecommerce Software for Shopping Carts Work?

Shopping cart software helps shoppers as at home online as they do in the real world. ECommerce software basically creates an easy to use extended self-service order form for your customers. ECommerce software makes it just as easy for your customers to put items in and take items back out of a shopping cart as it is in a common grocery store.

Just as there are variations of styles of shopping carts in large stores, there are several different kinds of eCommerce software available to create different kinds of shopping carts.

Who Knew There Were So Many Styles of Shopping Carts and So Many Types of Ecommerce Software to Create Them?

There are five basic types of eCommerce software for shopping carts used online today including the CGI Shopping Cart, the Cookie Shopping Cart (no, these are not intended only for sweet treats), the ASP (Active Server Pages) Shopping Cart, the Java Shopping Cart, and the JavaScript Shopping Cart.

One huge advantage to the CGI shopping cart is that it is supported by all major browsers. You wouldn't want to exclude any potential shoppers because your shopping cart doesn't support the right browser. Unfortunately, this kind of eCommerce software can be hard to set-up and even harder to maintain. CGI shopping carts are a little slow and can waste system resources and bandwidth.

Cookie shopping carts are easier to set up and easier to keep running smoothly. They are faster than the CGI shopping carts and use less system resources. Unfortunately, if your shoppers' browser doesn't support cookies, forget it. If your customer has disabled cookies, the result is the same, your shopping cart becomes ineffective.

Language for the ASP shopping cart (remember, active server pages) was written by Microsoft. This kind of eCommerce software makes ASP Shopping Carts easy to build. The can easily be edited and management is simpler than some other types of shopping carts.

By using Java Shopping Cart eCommerce software you can create interesting and detailed content with a good interface not limited by HTML. Java Shopping Carts can be hard to customize and slow.

JavaScript Shopping Carts are fast. Who wants to spend a long time waiting at the checkout stand? They are fairly easy to set up and not too hard to maintain. You can customize this kind of shopping cart and save bandwidth and system resources. Watch out though if you have customers that use browsers that don't support cookies and JavaScript (or those who have opted to turn of cookies). If you want a large shopping cart, plan to spend lots of time in the set up process.
