Should I Work at Home?
Just about everybody's dream job is to work at home. Wouldn't we all like to get up in the morning, pour a cup of coffee and read the paper, get an early start on the house work or even roll over and doze back off to sleep for another couple of minutes before we start our work day. Well when you work at home you do have those options. Unfortunately though you probably won't be working at home for very long.
Working out of the home can be a very rewarding and fulfilling but it's not as easy as most us imaging. Scheduling, discipline and a strong work ethic are the keys to successfully having a career in the home.
Scheduling Your Work at Home
Life gets boring at times as we go through our daily grind. We get up in time to get the kids off to a sitter or off to school, grab a quick breakfast and fight the same traffic jams to the office. Monday though Friday it's the same routine, as the saying goes 'Same stuff different day'. Our lives are pretty much scheduled for us. When you work at home the only difference is that you get to schedule the routine.
If you have a doctor's appointment in the morning you don't need to make arrangements at the office to cover for you while you're gone. That's one of the perks that come with a work at home job. That's also one of the responsibilities that you take on also. You have to schedule time later in the day to make up for leaving your office at home.
That might mean working a little that night after the kids have gone to bed or skipping the evening newscast to catch on what you should have done that morning. You must create a schedule and then have the discipline to stick to it. Far too many people lack the self-discipline to manage themselves in the home work environment.
The Work at Home Work Ethic
Self-discipline and a strong work ethic go hand in hand. When you work in the home there's no one looking over your shoulder making sure that what need to get done gets done. You have to develop the boss within. You are the one who has to make sure the job gets done, the phone calls get made, the flyers get mailed or the widgets get made. It's not the easiest thing in the world to get out of bed in the morning and be motivated. You have to be able to motivate yourself to get the job done.
Get yourself into the habit of going straight to work and seeing it through to completion. Everyday. Humans are creatures of habit and it's up to you to develop good work habits. Push yourself to get into a daily routine and then stick to it. You'll find that after a time the struggle to get started will start to dissipate and you'll be on the road to success.
