Ecommerce: a New Way to Buy

Ecommerce can be a new time saving solution. Any strategies that save time are attractive, as most of us don't feel we have enough hours in each day. Ecommerce makes it possible for us to be more informed, less harried shoppers. Ecommerce merchants understand the tremendous appeal of their idea. They have worked feverishly in recent years to raise consumer comfort level

Consumers who have been accustomed to brick and mortar establishments have been wooed to ecommerce by free shipping, liberal return policies, and zero liability in the event of fraud. As if that were not enough to woo traditionalists to ecommerce there is also selection, price and again, convenience. Ecommerce seems especially attractive to younger consumers who, for obvious reasons, move more comfortably in the world of technology. Still, don't count the older set out.

As comfort levels increase ecommerce benefits by capturing dollars from a wider demographic base. Instead of seeming radical or new-fangled, ecommerce is fast becoming a mainstream way to buy and sell.

Ecommerce Advantages

Ecommerce boasts many advantages in terms of time, convenience, and flexibility. With the advent of the internet, it is now possible to shop on our own time, twenty-four hours each day. This is a definite plus for all, particularly insomniacs and those working non-traditional hours. We are no longer subject to the constraints of banker's hours to stock our personal inventory of goods.

From books to videos, electronics, cars and nearly everything else we need or want, we have only to log on with credit card in hand. We can endlessly compare prices, consider individual product benefits and decide on the merits of the purchase. We can make our final decision in the comfort of our homes or offices. Just a short time later, the chosen item arrives, negotiated without long lines or pushy salespeople.

The joys of ecommerce cannot be overemphasized, especially during the holiday season when advantages such as free shipping and no parking worries sweeten the deal Additionally, retailers are offering a seamless shopping experience so that ecommerce purchases can be returned to traditional stores for convenience. Consumers not ready to give credit information online can also browse ecommerce sites before heading to the store to make comparisons, which saves time when they arrive at the store.

Ecommerce Disadvantages

Fraud and identity theft are at all time highs. Although, we are constantly reassured that ecommerce is safe, nothing is foolproof. Aside from fear of fraud, ecommerce suffers from another disadvantage. Ecommerce is a very individual experience. Visiting the mall or local store addresses our very human need for interaction and exchange. Ecommerce cannot support that need as it never presents any opportunity for human interaction.

Many retailers understand the schism expressed by consumers wanting the best of both worlds. Consequently, we are seeing more brick and mortar retailers launching an ecommerce arm. This is a very important strategy, which addresses another disadvantage of ecommerce. Comparing and shopping are largely regarded as tactile experiences. As consumers, we want to feel the merchandise. We want to see how it will look before we decide to make the purchase.

By the very nature of its design, ecommerce makes this experience impossible. Again, retailers are working on a number of policies, including no hassle returns to help us move beyond perceived disadvantages to become ecommerce champions.
