Launching Your Home Based Business

Congratulations! You've decided to launch your own home based business. Working from home can be fun, flexible, challenging and for the right entrepreneur, very lucrative.

According to a U.S. Department of Labor report, in May 2001, 19.8 million persons did some work at home as part of their primary job. A whopping 30 percent of those surveyed were self-employed.

Making the decision to start a home based business is a leap of faith and one that should be considered carefully. A home based business, like any other business, requires careful planning and should begin with a solid business plan.

Before You Quit Your Day Job, Create a Home Based Business Plan

It is crucial that you treat your home based business like a serious financial endeavor. A solid business plan will help you to determine your mission, goals, target customers, marketing strategy and start-up costs. Nobody likes to be surprised by unanticipated snags or unanticipated costs. Do your home work before you begin your home based business and your chances of success will soar.

The hardest part of creating a business plan is finding the initiative to get started. Once you sit down and begin to research and write, the creative juices in you will begin to flow.

Start by brainstorming. Write a detailed description of what your home based business offers to a well defined clientele. Describe your products or services in depth and include a description of the average Joe in your target audience who is most likely to purchase what you have to offer.

The first half of your business plan will help develop support and a solid business strategy. Don't expect to pull all the information you need from your head. Anyone reviewing your plan will expect you to back up conjectures with solid statistics and research.

Consider your market. Review your customer's needs and the services and products that are already available to them. Based on your research, evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses. Who are your greatest competitors and why should the customers you share choose you over a formidable competitor? Where are the holes in the market place and how can you and your home based business fill them?

The second half of the business plan will help you execute your selected business strategy. Products and services, marketing and your plan of operation will are all a part of your strategy. Your products and services, your marketing and your operations should all closely tie in with your strategy. Be realistic and base your plan on fact, not faith.

You Don't Have to Work Alone When Planning Your Home Based Business

Business men and women expect to read a professional, well-researched and appropriate plan. You don't have to create it alone.
