Starting a Home Based Business is Not for Everyone.

Many people cling to the idea that their dream job would be a home based business. We all like the thought of getting up and not having to face the traffic jams or the boring commute into the office each morning. We wouldn't have to face that jerk of a boss who doesn't understand that we can't work late on Tuesdays because it's soccer night for the 8 year old. What a dream it would be to have a home based business where we can call the shots and set your own hours and deadlines.

Well in today's work environment the opportunity for having your own home based business is easier to achieve than you might think. The problem is that a lot of people who dream of working out of the home aren't suited to the discipline and structured life style that you have to have when working from the home.

Home Based Business Hell

If you're a parent I'm sure that you have had to nag the kids to get the homework done. Then even when they do finally settle down to do it it's usually in front of the TV or with a pair of headphones on that you can still hear the thump thump thump from across the room. This is the same problem that may people who dream of having their own home based business come across. There is one difference though.

They don't realize that they are doing the same thing that their children are doing with their homework. Procrastination is the bane of all home based business owners. You know your in trouble when a doing load of laundry or flipping through the hundreds of cable channels seems more important at the time than sitting down and writing that proposal or updating that web site.

A lot of folks find that they've frittered away the whole peaceful afternoon instead of accomplishing what needed to be done. Now they find that they're trying to re-write an article, put together a newsletter or answer the e-mail while the TV is on in the next room and the kids are fighting over who's cheating at the video game again. The pressure's on and they are beating themselves up mentally because they knew that they should have done the work earlier.

Their dream job of working at home has just become worse than facing that ogre of a boss every day.

Structure and Routine in the Home Based Business

Arguably the most important traits in any successful home based business are structure and routine. As boring as this might sound all successful businesses are based on these principles. Whether in office environment or at home at the dining room table you must be able to become that jerk of a boss and look over your own shoulder to make sure that you are getting the job done. It doesn't have to be from 9 to 5 every day.

You still control the schedule but the important thing is that you must have a schedule. Business has to get done or there will be no business. Just because a business is based in the home doesn't mean that there isn't work to be done. Like the Nike slogan says, "Just Do It."
