Second, it's just plain dangerous out there for unescorted children to be wandering from strange home to strange home. And, as people expand beyond the city center they tend to choose more space between each other. That, and the dwindling circulation of print newspapers as everyone starts to access their news and advertising info online, makes newspaper route delivery more difficult on foot.

Distance traveled for the same number of papers to be delivered is far greater than it was 5 or 10 years ago. Auto delivery is more and more common - what newspapers refer to as "motor routes."

You are your own boss, responsible for increasing sales of the paper, but you still have a good strong base that you walk into the first day - folks who have taken the paper for years and will continue to do so. You don't start from scratch. You have a product with a solid reputation that isn't going away. You work outdoors in casual clothes, typically hours while others are asleep. For some this is a negative but for many who detest the 8am or 5pm commute this can be a pleasant side.

While you might need to drive to the route's starting location you may be able to then park your car and "walk the route, " which gives you physical exercise. Your workday is short - sometimes as few as two hours. And the pay is usually quite good, depending on the area. You can control your income and how many hours you work by deciding how many of the available routes you sign up for. And there are always home business opportunity routes available.
