Is it a Small Business Opportunity or a Lemon?
Every day you listen to the news you hear of someone who lost all of their money in pursuit of a small business opportunity. Every day it seems the media is reporting new scams being played out which are robbing people of their hard earned money, often while they are in pursuit of the American Dream - a lucrative small business opportunity.
Unless you are living with your head in the sand, you can't help but have to become very leary of anyone selling anything and especially if they are promising that what they are selling will make you money.
Is it any wonder that many people who would like to pursue a small business opportunity will not do so because the fear of being played for a fool is just too great?
While it is prudent to be cautious before giving your money to any one for any reason, it is not necessary to avoid all small business opportunities. For some, the purchase of a small business opportunity could turn out to be their best financial decision yet.
However, always proceed with caution
Always be Skeptical When Reviewing a Small Business Opportunity
Because there are so many scams on the market, it is a good idea to approach every new small business opportunity with a certain amount of skepticism. Not only will this prevent your from being too quick to invest in a small business opportunity, but it will also be a good first test of that business opportunity. After all, if they can convince you that the product or service is worthwhile despite your best attempts at skepticism, then the product or service probably is good enough to be easily marketed.
Play what is commonly referred to as "The Devil's Advocate". When you are speaking with someone about the small business opportunity, pose some "worst case scenarios" to them and see how they respond.
Thoroughly Investigate the Small Business Opportunity
When we talk about this aspect of searching for a small business opportunity, many people think of checking with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). While that is certainly the first thing you should do for any small business opportunity you are considering, that is not where your investigating should stop.
To do a check with the Better Business Bureau, you must contact the BBB in the city that the business opportunities corporate office is located. You should be able to find a physical address of the business on the company's web site. You will want to find out if the company is a member of the BBB and how many, if any, complaints have been filed against the company. They will also tell you if these complaints were successfully resolved.
After checking with the BBB you should also check with the Chamber of Commerce in the city and/or state that houses the company's corporate office.
Don't stop there! Look around the Internet on forum boards being hosted for small business opportunity seekers and see if any of the people there have had experience with this company and what their feelings are about the company.
