Time for a Reality Check on Your Home Based Business Plans

As you mull your escape plan from that high-rise office to your home based business, you get all warm and fuzzy don't you? Imagine cuddling with your children, lunching with your loved one and working in your sweat pants - when the mood strikes you.

Before you turn in your two-week notice ... get real. It's nice to imagine being at home with those lovely little ones while you operate your home based business. But, if you're going to imagine your time snuggling with them on the couch, be fair to yourself and imagine the time you will try to work while they pound (screaming) on your office door. Will you really be lunching with your significant other? Or will you be making lunch for your significant other?

Will you get tired of working in sweat pants and long for that quarter-length skirt or that tweet sports coat that broadens your manly physique? Before you bite, survey some of your friends and get a birds-eye view of what it's really like to work from home.

Take an Informal Poll of People Who Actually Work from a Home Based Business

Don't get discouraged when you take off your rose colored glasses and see this adventure for what it really is - a challenging, difficult adventure that will require organization, self-discipline and the art of multi-tasking. Despite the grey areas, once you find your feet on the ground, you will learn to address the various issues specific to home based business.

Start by visiting with friends and acquaintances who have actually owned and operated a home based business. Make a list of questions that are niggling at your mind (come on, you know there are some doubts niggling at your mind). Make a list of your perceptions and then conduct some informal interviews. Ask your questions and share your points of view. People who have been or are there are the best to offer advice and warn you about potential pitfalls.

Here are a few questions you might ask:

-What kind of home based business do you own?

-Why did you decide on that home based business?

-What factors contributed to your decision to work at home?

-Were you disappointed or pleasantly surprised when you actually began to work from home?

-What do you like about owning a home based business?

-What are your greatest challenges?

-Where there any big surprises? Good or Bad?

-How did you address those surprises?

-What should I take into consideration before I start my own home based business?

-What would you do differently if you were to start over again?

Be frank about your expectations and don't be afraid to express your fears.

Talk to People Who Couldn't Hack a Home Based Business

Many people attempt to work at home and decide home based business doesn't suit their personalities.

It's important to talk to people who found it difficult to work from home. Some people get lonely, find it hard to get motivated, get tired of living at work instead of working at home, or find it too hard to say, "No" to constant interruptions.

Compare your expectations with their realities. Remember, too, to explore your differences. People who lack organization will find it hard to work at home because their world's mesh and it becomes too difficult to draw a line between them. Maybe you are extremely organized and will be much more successful.

Don't let others make up your mind, but listen and weigh the information you glean from these interviews carefully. Summarize what you learn in two columns marked "pros" and "cons." This will help assure that you have taken a realistic look at the art of owning a home based business.
