Using Affiliates As an Online Business Opportunity

What Does it Mean to be an Affiliate As an Online Business Opportunity?
You hear the term all of the time, affiliate, but do you really understand this online business opportunity?
An affiliate is defined as any "referrer" or website that promotes a product or service for a Merchant in an effort to earn revenue from this promotion.
A Merchant is defined as someone who owns a product or service business and is sharing revenues with an affiliate based on the affiliate's referral performance.
This symbiotic relationship is mutually beneficial. Affiliate programs can drive targeted traffic to the Merchant. And an effective Affiliate can combine several affiliations into a lucrative online business opportunity for himself!
Different Affiliate Programs Can be Combined into an Online Business Opportunity
There are 3 basic affiliate programs which you can choose and combine to build your online business opportunity, though only the first two are commonly used. The third is used much less frequently.
Pay Per Click - this is when an affiliate is compensated for sending traffic to the merchant. The traffic is not required to do anything once they get there for the affiliate to be compensated. In this case, the affiliate is like the bus drivers whose job is done when he deposits his passengers on the Merchant's home page.
Pay Per Sale - this is when the affiliate is compensated by the merchant if the referral generates an actual sale or purchase. This is the most common form of affiliations available and can be found with most large online retail sites. This will probably be the majority of your affiliates as you build your online business opportunity.
Pay Per Lead - this is when the merchant agrees to pay for a qualified (or sometimes unqualified lead). This type of affiliate program is very uncommon because it is subjective. Your affiliate online business opportunity will not be built on this type of program.
How to Build an Affiliate Program into a Lucrative Online Business Opportunity
To be a successful online affiliate, your site needs to either have a huge amount of traffic or target a specific audience, preferably one untapped by the merchants.
It has been found that the closer the affiliate site content matches the merchants products, the higher the likelihood of click throughs, and more importantly click throughs that lead to sales. Keep this in mind when choosing the Merchants that you want to be an affiliate for.
It is best to start with a category that you feel you can market, which means a category that you enjoy. Say for example you choose toys. Search the Internet for retailers, wholesalers and other distributors of toys. Then visit each of their web sites and look for a section labeled affiliates. You may not have even noticed this in the past when you were shopping at these sites, but most online sites do have them. You just weren't looking for them.
Typically you will have to fill out a brief application to be accepted as an affiliate. In this application they will ask your website URL and they will look at your site before accepting or denying you. Like you want to choose your merchants, they too want to be selective of their affiliates - some more than others.
