The Basics of Asbestos Cancer
The name, asbestos cancer, is self-explanatory, one would say. Asbestos cancer is a carcinoma that afflicts humans. The carcinogen, in this case, is asbestos in the form of fibers. Asbestos cancer, also known as mesothelioma, is a rare form of cancer that afflicts the lungs and in certain cases, the abdomen, of patients suffering from it. Asbestos cancer is a fatal disease that was detected in the 70s. When I say detected, I mean that the source of asbestos cancer was detected in that period.
Asbestos cancer occurs as a result of prolonged exposure to broken asbestos fibers. It was a lethal disease, with not much chances of survival, when it was first discovered. Now, though it still remains a lethal disease, there has been some progress in the cause of finding a treatment form for asbestos cancer. Nowadays the incidence of asbestos cancer has lessened, as asbestos usage has been curtailed after it was detected to be the cause for asbestos cancer.
However, even now we find people coming down with asbestos cancer.
The Lethal Delay Action of Asbestos Cancer
You may wonder, if asbestos was detected as a cause of asbestos cancer in the 70s, and its usage subsequently reduced drastically, how is it that people still contract this ailment. There can be two reasons for this. One of course could be the simple fact that the person in question, the patient, was still in contact with asbestos fibers, despite knowing of the hazards it posed.
This would be a sad state of affairs, and speaks badly of both the person exposed to asbestos and the employer that still had such hazardous conditions, if the exposure happened at the work place. However, the other reason sounds more scary. This has to do with the time period that asbestos cancer takes to manifest itself in a person. Asbestos cancer does not immediately manifest itself in the body of the victim.
You may have been exposed to exposure as long back as fifteen years ago, and the disease could manifest itself now. In some cases the delay period can be even longer. However, the average delay period can be placed safely at ten to fifteen years. There is another interesting factor about asbestos cancer. This is what makes asbestos cancer such a scary proposition. There is not much to go by before you can diagnose the disease.
Of course, nowadays there are ways of monitoring early warning signs and effectively launching an investigation. However, imagine the situation in the says when it was first discovered! One day you are fine, with just a rattling cough and a few other symptoms, which could be attributed to any common illness, and boom! the next day the doctor pronounces you to be suffering from asbestos cancer!
The Other Scary Thing about Asbestos Cancer
A person does not necessarily have to be exposed to asbestos for long periods of time, say a year, in order for him or her to contract asbestos cancer. The period of exposure can be as short as two to three months. This is the other scary thing about asbestos cancer. However, with the advancements in science, asbestos cancer is no longer the impossible-to-escape-from menace it used to be. True, it is still a fatal disease, but now, there is hope.
