Keeping Your Children While Starting Your Work at Home Business

While you will be happy starting your work at home business, it may be difficult to balance this with keeping your children happy. This is because you will be extremely busy at first attempting to set up your home work business. Naturally, your kids are going to think that you have more time to spend playing and interacting with them since you are at home. They will definitely vie for your attention, since you are visually in sight of them or just down the hall or upstairs.

As soon as you enter your home work venture, sit your children down and explain to them that Mom or Dad will now be working at home. After the immediate excitement of you being there or dread of you being around the house, you will have to lay boundaries of your home office and work hours. You need to explain to them that they are not to interrupt, unless it is for an emergency.

Make certain that you spell out them what an emergencies entails (e.g., the house is on fire, somebody is hurt, etc.). Also, tell them that they must knock on your home office door before entering. This will not only keep them from barging in on you during your work day, but also instill upon them a sense of professionalism. You should also make sure that they do not answer your work phone or send faxes from your home office.

Incorporating Your Children into the Course of Your Home Work Business Day

When you are at home, you will inevitably want to incorporate your home work business day. There are many ways of going about this. If you have high school age children, you can have them work for you. This beats have to pay employees or having and intern whom you have to grade or take time interviewing. Not only will you spend some time with your children, but they will learn about the working world. You can have your children work for you after school, during weekends, or on school breaks.

If they give you hard time about getting paid, you can either set up a nominal hourly rate, add something extra to their allowance, or set incentives (e.g., they get to pick where the family goes on vacation, choose what they want for dinner a couple of nights a week, etc.). If your children, do not perform as they should, then you need to discipline them. This should not be a grounding or anything of that sort, but docking them pay or suspending them from days at work.

Enjoy Your Home Work Environment

Now that your home work business is up and running, it is time for you to enjoy it. This means take advantage of the flexibility that you now have during your work day. Take time to talk to your kids when they return to your house from school or their friend's house. Have fun, because these times will pass by very quickly.
