Every Small Business Starts As an Idea

At the root of every successful small business you always find at least one great idea! A successful and profitable small business is built upon great ideas that have been well researched.

Whether you realize it or not, if your interest in owning your own small business has motivated you to the point of research, then it is a guarantee that your seeking mind has already considered and presented several different small business ideas to you. Many of these have probably entered as a fleeting thought and were quickly discarded because they really were not a small business that you would enjoy running.

Say for example as you are driving to your job on a beautiful summer day and you spot someone with several dogs on a leash. As your brain pulls up a mental image of you "chained" in your office during the lovely weather, you think to yourself "I could start a dog walking service and be outside all summer long! " Quickly your brain flashes 6 months ahead and you see yourself in a nice warm office with a cup of hot coffee while outside your window it is blizzard like conditions!

Your thought quickly become replaced by "No way! I would only want to work half a year" and that small business idea joins the circular file in your brain along with many similar small business ideas that just were not the right match for you.

But is there one idea (or a few ideas) that didn't get discarded into the circular file? Your brain stored them instead and keeps pulling them back out for consideration?

These are the Small Business Ideas You Want to Consider Further

Write these ideas down and set them aside - that is your Idea List. Now make another list. A list of all of the reasons you want to start a small business - this is your Reasons List. Now take a look at both lists together. Is there one idea on your Idea List that looks like it would help you to realize more of the things on your Reasons List , that the others would? If so - you have narrowed it down to the one small business idea you should investigate first.

The one idea that you have at this point in time that would help you to achieve the majority of your current reasons for wanting to own a small business.

Research That Small Business Idea to See If it Looks Lucrative

Successful small businesses are those that can achieve a profit with their small business idea. The next step before you choose to implement your small business idea is to see if there is a need for the business and if the potential for profit exists and how strongly.

The most important thing here is to focus on filling a niche. You expertise, uniquely applied within your business field, is what creates a niche in the market. During the research stage of your idea, try to discover how your small business could fill a niche.

Talk to anyone you can find in the industry you are considering, research the industry, join related forum groups if you can find them - that is the best place for locating others in the business and getting honest assessments of the small business idea you are considering.
