Your Home Based Business - When to Throw in the Towel

Your home based business dream has turned into a nightmare. The debts are mounting and even close members of your family are turning against you. Still you hang on hoping and wishing and looking out for the big break that will turn around your situation.

But your debt keeps on mounting at an alarming rate and doubts begin to surface.

How do you tell that's its time to throw in the towel and shut down before your home based business takes you down with it?

It is important to appreciate that most entrepreneurs chalk up three or more failures before they hit pay dirt. So your current business not working out is not really such a big deal and if the situation is brought under control it could end up being a blessing in disguise.

How Big is the Debt in Your Home Based Business?

The first place to look is the financial position of your home based business, which in most cases should not be very different from your own personal financial position. You will need to accurately predict how much time you have before the ship sinks.

You can postpone your debts only for so long, they always inevitably catch up with you.

An important lesson here is that the usual optimism that goes into sales and other areas of your business need to be put away when you are looking at your financial position. Only cold facts and accurate figures will help in making the right decision here.

Stop the Leak in Your Home Based Business

If you decide that you will try and rescue your home based business rather than throw in the towel, then the next thing is to check if you can stop the leak.

If your debt situation is continuing to mount at a high rate and the only way you can stop it is by shutting down, then that is probably the best decision.

Debt is a bottomless pit that many never get out of, so there are no compromises here.

If you can somehow stop the leak or bring it down to a minimal level, meaning that you can stop most expenses, like suspending workers, cancelling orders made etc. then maybe you can look at other options that will allow you to continue with the business.

Can You Temporarily Find Another Source of Income to Support Your Home Based Business?

The stories of entrepreneurs who took jobs elsewhere temporarily to sustain and save their dreams are countless. A little time away from your business will also be extremely useful in helping you analyze the whole project to decide just how viable it is. Admittedly this may require a big effort on your part because maybe you went into business to get away from working for somebody else. But there is no harm in going back into being employed, at least temporarily while you plan the way forward.

Is There a Light at the End of the Tunnel for Your Home Based Business?

This is probably the most difficult question to answer without outside help. The ideal thing to do is to go to a consultant or expert although, if your business is not doing well, chances are that you may not be able to afford the services. Still in the long term, this is the cheapest option. A qualified consultant in your kind of business will be able to give you a very accurate position of your business complete with options and possibilities.
