Why Network Your Home Business?
If you have recently started a home business, you probably have discovered how difficult it is to advertise effectively with such a small budget. You are probably looking for new and more efficient ways to advertise that still don't require a lot of up front cash. Well, you may want to look at networking.
Networking is typically sited as the best way to advertise, because not only does it use the age-old, tried and true method of word-of-mouth, but it also costs little to nothing extra to accomplish. In addition, networking is the best way to provide mutually beneficial advertising, because you are essentially asking others to scratch your back while you scratch theirs.
Traditional Network Methods for Your Home Business
There are many ways to network, and one of the most traditional is through a series of business meetings held in your area by the local Chamber of Commerce. These meetings were created for the specific purpose of networking, and attendants are encouraged to talk about their businesses, give out business cards, and prepare speeches about the ways their business has grown and profited.
In return, you must listen to others talk about their businesses, and you must take business cards from others and try to put in a good word for them when the situation arises. There are also similar home business associations that hold online meetings on the internet, and talk about ways that the internet has helped them market and solicit business.
Another traditional networking method is the trade show, where you can get exposure from other businesses in your area and also be able to size up the competition. Finally, there are sharing systems in which several small businesses get together and pool their resources in order to share office space, telephones, and clerical employees. By doing this, you have instant access to each of the other business' entire networks and you are able to get your business out of your home.
Non-Traditional Network Methods for Your Home Business
Some network methods that may not be obvious but are still nevertheless extremely efficient are those of local businesses that you and your home business patronize for goods or services. For example, it is likely that you will use the services of a printer when purchasing business cards and flyers for your home business. It is also likely that you will use the services of a desktop publisher when creating brochures and direct mail solicitation.
In addition, your home business will no doubt need the services of some type of consultant. All of these experts have a set of contacts within their grasp, and you can gain access to those contacts by building a relationship with the expert himself. Show yourself eager to refer his services to your friends and associates, take him out to lunch, and most of all, use him exclusively for all your products.
In this way, your home business and its operations will not only be thoroughly familiar to him, but will also be on the forefront of his mind when he meets with his own contacts who may need the services of someone in your industry.
