Many Small Business Owners Looking for an Association to Join Turn to Their Local Chamber of Commerce
The US Chamber of commerce has more members than any other small business association. And this membership has spiked severely in the last few years with more and more Americans joining the ranks of small business owners.
It does not take long, after starting a small business, before the small business owner realizes that his small size often puts him at a distinct disadvantage as compare to a larger business. The US Chamber of Commerce serves to level the playing field a little bit, giving the small business owner access to more services typically only available to large business.
The Chamber of Commerce Offers All the Benefits of Most Small Business Associations
Through a chamber of commerce membership, the small business owner has more access to technical and other information, allowing him to stay current in his field and be able to monitor the trends in the industry.
Like all small business associations, the Chamber of Commerce also offers access to information for its members on all aspects of starting a business, and growing and maintaining a business.
They often offer training and workshops that you can participate in. And events which will provide beneficial networking opportunities with other area businesses.
Additionally, and perhaps most importantly for some small business owners, this association will offer the collective buying power of members to keep costs down on various products and services needed by the small business. Typically, the discounts are available for products such as office supplies and a vast amount of services from copying services to legal services, and most importantly to many - Health Insurance.
This collective buying power gives the small business owner the opportunity to purchase health insurance other necessities of his business at rates that previously were reserved for large companies.
Is the Chamber of Commerce Always the Best Choice for a Small Business Association?
Absolutely not. Small businesses are not cut out with a cookie cutters. Each one is unique and as such has it's own set of needs that the small business owner will be looking to meet through a small business association. While most small business, and trade, associations are similar, there are slight differences in the benefits you will receive from one to the next, and, often not as slight, fluctuations in membership costs.
It is always best to review a few small business associations to see which one meets your small business needs. After narrowing your search down to a few choices that will meet your needs, do a cost/benefit comparison to decide which one is best for your small business.
If your main objective for joining a small business association is to do some local networking with other businesses, the local chamber of commerce may be your best choice. However, if you are looking for national networking and/or specialized instruction in a particular trade, you might be better off with a national small business association or a trade association membership.
