Financing Your Home Based Business

One of the most important steps in planning the birth of a home based business is financing. Too many times, small businesses go under within 3 months due to lack of proper financial planning. In order to avoid being one of those statistics, you will need to carefully set forth a plan that includes dates and specific amounts of money to be used at each stage in the development of your new home based business.

One of the quickest and easiest ways to finance the operations before the profits come rolling in is to use a credit card (or a few), if you do not have any savings available to carry you for a few months. In addition, it may be possible for your home based business to qualify for a bank loan. If not, do not overlook the possibility that you may need to take on a second job in the evenings that can help support the overhead load you will incur.

If you have a sound business plan that appears feasible and well-researched, you may even qualify for a loan from a venture capitalist, who may be able to give you money in exchange for some type of ownership in the company. And don't overlook family and friends, who are more willing to loan money than to quit their own jobs for an entrepreneurial venture!

Networking Your Home Based Business

One of the best ways to get your business out there is through word of mouth, but if you are not connected to anyone in the industry you serve, you may have a tough time with this type of advertising. The best way to get connected is visit your local Chamber of Commerce.

Besides being a hub of activity for similar home based businesses and small retail businesses in the area, the Chamber of Commerce typically holds monthly or biweekly networking meetings which local business owners can attend and pass out business cards. You should strive to attend as many of these meetings as you can, collect as many business cards as you can, and then begin calling these folks later in the week to meet up with you for lunch.

Become chummy with other local businesses, and you will be amazed at how quickly and earnestly they will go out of their way to find work for you.

Marketing Your Home Based Business

As a new business owner, you will soon realize just how important marketing is to your business' success. Even as you grow and become profitable, you still will never be able to quit marketing. Think about how successful a company like Coca-Cola is, and then think about how many commercials and advertisements you see for Coca-Cola on a daily basis. This is proof positive that you must continue to market and put yourself out there if you wish continued success.

Word of mouth, business cards, flyers, classified ads, and web sites are some of the most often-used and most successful types of marketing out there today. Of course, when you are a little bigger, you can afford to take out full-page ads in magazines, and do radio and television commercials. But whatever marketing strategy you use, just remember to never stop.
