Be Careful When Choosing a Debt Management Services Company

When you are so far in debt that you start to consider using a debt management services company, you have to be careful that you aren't so desperate that you choose just any company to work with. There are a lot of these type of companies that are just out to get your money and scam you. In this articles you will find some tips for making sure that you are working with a legitimate company.

Debt Management Services Company: Relations with the Company

If you contact a debt management services company to request information, whether over the phone or on the web, they should not have any problems sending you the information that you are requesting. They should send information about their company, programs, services, and fees without requiring you to provide them with any confidential information. In addition, you should feel comfortable when you are talking to or meeting with anybody from the debt management company.

The staff at the company should be very courteous and friendly. They should be completely willing to spend as much time as needed with you and should be willing to explain their program in full to you. They should not have any problems answering any of your questions and should never tell you that a question you have asked is stupid.

Debt Management Services Company: Money Matters

When a company turns you away because you don't have a minimum amount of debt you can be sure that they are out for nothing except profit. They should not turn you away because you don't have a minimum amount of debt, they should be willing to help you no matter what your amount of debt is. If you can't afford the minimum payment in the debt management program that they work out for you, then they should still be willing to guide you to other resources where you can get help.

You should be especially wary of companies that dismiss you because of this, or that tell you that you should file bankruptcy due to the fact that you can't afford the minimum payment. A company that is truly there to help you should have extremely low fees or no fees at all. Also, they should never charge you any fees for you to close your account with them. In addition, don't work with any company unless they send your payments to your creditors weekly.

If they only send your payments to your creditors every other week or only once per month then there is a large chance that your payments will get to your creditors late, which would defeat a large part of the purpose of using a debt management company in the first place.

Debt Management Services Company: Confidentiality and Accreditation

A debt management company should not share any of your personal or confidential information with any outside parties without your permission. They also should not sell any of your personal or confidential information to any outside parties. Request a copy of the company's Privacy Policy and read it to find out what their policies are regarding the sharing and selling of your information.

Before you start working with this type of company you should make sure that they have official accreditation from an independent third party. If they have received this certification then it means that the independent third party has put the company through an extremely rigorous review of their policies and procedures.
