Home Based Business: Making the Transition

Time Changes with Your Home Based Business
It may take some time to catch up with yourself after you launch your home based business. Contrary to the common fantasy that you will enjoy a good deal more free time, you will likely have less time. While it is true that you may have more flexibility in scheduling your time, you will often find yourself putting in more hours for your home based business. This will be an adjustment for family and or friends who have been accustomed to receiving more of your attention.
It will no doubt be an adjustment for you as well. If you have not taken the time to write down your home based business goals and the reason behind this choice, now is the time. Focus on your commitment will help you to build resolve when you are facing disappointed friends and family. It will also help to assuage the occasional feeling of deprivation when you have to skip the gym or lunch with a friend.
Financial and Lifestyle Changes with Your Home Based Business
Ideally, you should have at least six to nine months of living expenses in the bank before you leave your job. Or, if you have a spouse or partner, you might pare down your expenses so that you can manage on the remaining income until your business becomes profitable. Still, in the first several months, or maybe even years you may experience significant changes to your financial status. Consequently, you may find yourself making many lifestyle adjustments.
To smooth the transition, discuss anticipated changes and impact with your family. It can be particularly difficult for children to understand the changes, so it is important to keep an open dialogue. Help them to process any disappointments they may feel as a result of the adjustment Let them know that you understand their disappointment. Take care to listen. You might even share a story of your own disappointment. Remind them that this is a temporary period of transition.
You can also brainstorm together about other activities that your family might enjoy. Some good resources for low or no cost activities are your local or community newsletters and church bulletins. Try a family game or home movie night, or afternoon picnic. The most important thing is that you spend time together and have fun as a family. With a little creativity and imagination, you won't even notice the slash to your entertainment budget.
Personal Changes with Your Home Based Business
It is absolutely normal to experience a host of emotions in the first weeks and months after you launch your home based business. You may be excited, overwhelmed, guilty, frightened, or discouraged. However you feel, its okay. Again, all of this is normal. Remember to stay focused on the big picture. Just because you have one bad day or even one bad week doesn't make you a bad individual or business person.
If you are finding it difficult to keep things in perspective, rely on a trusted friend to help you really see yourself-all of you, not just the fault that you are focusing. Also, pay attention to your inner dialogue. It is a good idea to plan a positive response in advance so that the next time you catch yourself saying, "I can't believe I did something so stupid, " you can immediately correct your thoughts.
