Mountshannon is located on the western
shores of Lough Derg about 35 kms from Limerick City and approx
53 kms from Shannon Airport. It is very easy to find being on the
lakeshore route. Winner of the Tidy Towns Award over 10 years
ago, this scenic village is a perfect location for the angler who
wants to explore the mighty Lough Derg. There is a modern Marina
where cruisers are serviced and many lake users overnight here.
WHERE TO FISH
This is a good base for the Pike and Coarse Angler. Excellent Pike
fishing around the shores locally is possible and boats are available for hire.
Mountshannon is also within easy access of the East Clare Lakes
and other shore venues along the
western shores of the lake, Mountshannon and
Killaloe.
While other coarse
fish are present, it is not regarded strictly as a coarse fishing location
due to lack of shore facilities. For those who have contacts to local
landowners, private access may be possible and in these cases some good
coarse angling may be had, particularly for bream where 100lb+ bags are very
possible. Lakeland Holidays who offer Irish Tourist Board
Approved Caravan & Camping & Mobile Holmes Accommodation also
provide private access to their guests
of 1 km of shoreline. Contact Tel: +353 61 927225 Fax: +353 61 927336 or Email

Contribution Received:
Great place to fish. Masses of water. A boat is a must.
Lots
of quiet reed lined bays where you can see the fish you are after. The Lough is
massive but you do not have to look hard to find the fish in summer.
Winter is a bit more difficult, and a lot colder.
OPEN SEASON
There is no close season for Coarse and Pike
fishing but there
are best times for individual species. SEE MORE INFO ON
INDIVIDUAL COARSE FISH SPECIES

You can become a reporter to add value to these reports every week, we would
like to hear from you and don't forget to send us a photo which we will feature

ANGLING FEES
There is no rod licence required for coarse and pike fishing
on the River Shannon.
However, as this part of the region lies south of Banagher
Bridge and is in the Lower Shannon Region, a voluntary fee in the form of a
Share Certificate is available to fish the area, payable to the Lower Shannon
Trout & Coarse Fisheries Development Society.
HOW WE RATE THE FISHING
The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board has undertaken
extensive research over recent years to bring you these guides. We endeavour to
rate angling according to importance of the target angling
species present, facilities and access on a fishery by fishery basis.
While we use certain fisheries and angling criteria to assess each fishery, the
rating system only purports to be a guideline designed to assist anglers
in planning a fishing trip to the region and is constantly under review.
