First of all, it is important to understand what a government granted contract to your small business is. Basically, what this is referring to is the US Government's purchasing. The Government purchases many goods and services from outside contractors or businesses, that are necessary for the running of the government. Typically, when the government has the need for a particular good or service, they will grant a contract to one or more supplier.

This can sometimes be done on a Federal Level (say for example a company that makes a particular part which is needed by the US Department of Defense) and at the local level (for example your local police department will grant contracts to a local towing company).

Historically, for a small business to get granted a government contract on the Federal level was impossible and on the local level was not much easier. It was just too hard for the small business owner to compete with large business and secure a government granted contract.

Many things have changed in America in the business world in the past decade. Small business can now compete with large business on a much more equal playing field. This is also the case in the granting of government contracts.

The US Small Business Administration was established to help small business owners. There are many ways that the Small Business Administration offers help to small business. One thing that the SBA does for small business is to help them get access to Government granted contracts for goods and services.

In this regard, the Small Business Administration has now made it possible for a small business which provides a good or service that is needed by the US Government, to bid on and receive government contracts that used to be granted only to larger businesses.

Why Would a Small Business Want a Government Granted Contract?

Depending on the nature of your small business, and you what goods or services you provide, a government granted contract could be a boom in business for you!

The government is a large business with large consumption of goods and services. A government granted contract will typically mean a big client with a lot of repeat business.

It is no secret among the American people that the US Government often over spends or spends on things it shouldn't have, as such, the American Government is probably the largest consumer or goods and services in the country. If your small business picks up a government contract, whether it is for something like copy paper they have to purchase, plowing service for a local municipality, or the building of technological devices, you can be fairly confident the government will be your small business' largest account.
