It Takes a Certain Type of Person to Start a Small Business
Even if you dream about owning a small business, you may not have what it takes to start one. Not everyone has what it takes to start a small business. Not everyone would be successful if they did start a small business. Not everyone would be comfortable living the life of a small business owner.
So what is this mysterious "it" that you must have to start a small business? Where can you get "it"? And do you really even want "it"?
Studies have found that most small business owners have a certain personality type and characteristics that make them both successful and happy with small business ownership.
The Personality Traits That People Who Start a Small Business Tend to Have
Although not all small business owners will see themselves in this description, studies have found that most people who choose to start a small business share certain entrepreneurial character traits.
People who start a small business are usually very ambitious, sometimes overly so, and many have been labeled as over achievers or work-a-holics. They tend to be super critical of themselves and sometimes others. These are the people who often feel that no one can do a job as good as they can. For this reason they often do not work well as part of a team. They tend to enjoy working alone and this is one of the appeals to them for starting a small business.
They also have high expectations of themselves (and sometimes others) and starting a small business fits right into their expectations and standards.
People who choose to start a small business sometimes resent being told what to do. They do not like working under a boss. This desire to be their own boss is part of their fuel to start their own small business.
If you are looking to start a small business, you probably are independent and assertive, confident in yourself and your decisions, and like to be in control of your life and your finances at all times.
People Looking to Start a Small Business Must Be Comfortable with the Lifestyle
Often starting a small business, especially if it is run out of your home like many entrepreneurs choose, will blur the lines between business and private life. Both the business owner, and the family of this person, must be comfortable with the lifestyle that may be created by starting a small business.
People who start a small business have to be comfortable with a higher risk level than other people. Starting a small business often involves risk to finances. Furthermore, some small business owners put their house and other personal assets at risk to finance the small business. To be happy with small business ownership you must be comfortable with the level of risk it puts you at. If the risk associated with small business ownership will keep you awake at night, you probably should not start one.
