Should You Start a Home Based Business?
More and more people these days are going to work for themselves by starting a home based business. The idea is tempting: you can work at home, say goodbye to your boss forever, do something you really like and get paid for it, too.
Unfortunately, the reality of the home based business is not so glamorous. You often have to work long hours for little or no profit. You don't have the security of health insurance or vacation benefits like you do with a regular job working for someone else.
So how do you know if a home based business is right for you? Ask yourself these questions to help you get started.
Do I Have a Passion I Can Use in My Home Based Business?
Every home based business, like every other business, must start with an idea. It helps if you're going to work on something every day and see it through from a mere idea to profitability if you're working on something you actually like. Something you're passionate about. This could be something you do as a hobby, or something you would like to do if you had more time. You could make something you enjoy creating or provide a service that is something you love to do. If you don't have a passion you are totally willing to immerse your life in, think twice before starting a home based business.
Do I Have Money to Start a Home Based Business?
Every home based business requires some kind of material goods to get it off the ground. This could be as simple as a computer and office supplies or as complex as the raw materials for a craft or toys for the kids to play with in your home based day care center. All of these things require money. If you have savings to devote to starting your business, that's great. If not, you may be able to get a bank loan or find a partner to help you start your business. The fact remains that money is the thing that makes or breaks all home based businesses, same as any other kind of business.
You also will have to do research into what kind of licenses, permits, insurance or other legal (and sometimes costly) hurdles you will have to jump before you can get your home based business off the ground. If you don't like thinking about money or legal issues, you have to be able to afford professionals who can help you.
Do I Have Space for a Home Based Business?
There are two important words in the phrase home based business: home based. While not every small business run by an individual is actually run out of their home, that is a great place to start because you're already paying the rent or mortgage on that property and thus don't have to pay more for a place to set up your business. You can also get a break on your taxes if a portion of your home is dedicated to your business.)
Having space to spread out your materials and a room away from the madness of your household to think, plan, make phone calls and work in is definitely a major asset. I you don't have a lot of free space, it's not the end of the world, but it certainly helps.
If you can answer these three questions in the affirmative, congratulations! You could be on your way to starting your own home based business.
