Serving Sizes

These legs are huge, and one leg could easily fill a single person. 2 pounds of king crab will serve 2 to 3 people easily if you're serving with additional entrees. If you're having a crab feast or are serving a group of crab lovers, 10 pounds would be good for 6 to 7 people.

Storing and Thawing

King crab arrives in the form of frozen legs and claws. Frozen king crab can be kept in a freezer for several months due to it's protective glaze. To thaw king crab, place it in the refrigerator a day prior to cooking it. Left-over king crab should be kept under refrigeration and used within a couple of days.

Size and Count

These legs and claws are massive. Our standard at Fisherman's Express is that each Captain's Reserve leg or claw weighs over 2/3 pounds or more. Many legs will weigh over one pound or more with some claws being bigger than your fist!

Our Captain's Reserve red king
crab is some the biggest crab that is caught in the annual Bristol Bay king crab fishery. This is Alaska's main king crab fishery and produces the majority of Alaska's king crab. Bristol Bay's pure waters hold some of the largest king crab in the world.

Fishing Seasons

Alaska's main commercial fishery for Bristol Bay red king crab starts in mid-October and generally last for several days. Approximately 250 boats fish hard for days on end until the annual catch quota is met. There are additional smaller red king crab fisheries in Norton Sound and Southeast Alaska.

Availability

When king crab caught it is cooked and blast frozen to capture its quality. This commercial level of processing allows king crab to be kept frozen for long periods of time, up to a year or more. Frozen crab is glazed with an outer shell of frozen water to protect it from the elements.
