The year 2002 was designated by the United Nations as the International Year of Mountains. The year is a worldwide celebration of mountain communities with a focus on mountain sustainable development.
State agencies and private organizations in the U.S. are participating in the commemoration of the Year of Mountains with special festivals or symposia. The U.S. is proud of its mountain communities and their efforts to maintain mountain biodiversity and promote economic security and a healthy environment.
Mountains present unique challenges in sustainable development, and linked to this web site are only a few of the innumerable public and private U.S. programs which offer services, information, or support to mountain communities.
