FISHERIES & ANGLING HIGHLIGHTS
CHRISTMAS CRACKERS COME EARLY AS
WINTER PIKING SEASON PRODUCES THE GOODS
Before a storm there is a calm, not so over the
past two weeks. There was a severe storm at time of writing our
last report two weeks ago which was followed by an extended calm
and dry spell of weather since with relatively mild temperatures for the
time of year.
Water levels have recovered well but remain
quite high in places. Get the woollies on as temperatures are set
to tumble for the next few days up to the weekend. Last week there
was a number of winter piking events on our fisheries with several
doubles up to 22lbs plus recorded. Read our full report to see
who's catching what and where this week. TIGHT LINES!

PHOTO FINISH ON LOUGH GLORE....
Last week we predicated that Lough Glore would
produce some cracking pike over the winter months, Well as our
photos shows this week it has started in earnest. On Sunday last
November 14th the Larry Kelly (Plumbing & Heating
Services) sponsored open pike competition produced some super pike,
conditions for pike fishing were quiet good with light winds, mind
you it was a little cold on the lake. The hours of fishing were from
10am - 4pm and from the start reports of pike being caught were
sounding out across the lake, A lot of people don't realize how well
sound travels across water. Anyway as it turned out Charlie Mapels
from Blanchestown Co Dublin came out top rod with a cracking pike
weighing 22lbs 8oz, 2nd was Mick Flanagan 20lbs 4oz, 3rd Larry Kelly
14lbs 9oz, 4th Eric Kelly 7lbs 6oz, 5th Paddy Gorman 5lbs 9oz, 6th
David Gray 5lbs 4oz (Angling Correspondent Irish Daily Star) 7th
Paddy Smith 3lbs 11oz. Junior winners Sean Weston, Amanda Smith and
April Flanagan. As you can see the quality of pike caught on the day
was incredible, and the prizes sponsored by Larry Kelly more than
matched the fishing. Fantastic top of the range Reels and Rods were
up for grabs on the day, along with a super range of pike lures. The
next pike competition on Lough Glore is the Joey Dunlop Cup. This
will be fished on December 5th. Also the club are running a fund
raising competition on December 27th this will be fished on Lough
Derravaragh with somewhere in the region €1,000 in prize money, more
on this event in the coming weeks. Now just before we finish
with Lough Glore their annual raffle tickets are on sale at the
moment,1st prize is a Hamper, 2nd Turkey, 3rd Ham, 4th Brandy,
Tickets €1.00 or book of 12 tickets €10. The draw takes place in Mc
Cormacks Lounge Castlepollard. More info on Lough Glore please
contact Castlepollard Angling Centre Tel: 044-61852.

JOHNNY OWENS PERPETUAL CUP....
Lough Derravaragh A.C. were in action last Sunday
14th November. Up for grabs was the Johnny Owens Perpetual Cup. The
lake fished well for some visiting anglers earlier
in the week, and this seemed to be the case on Sunday for those
anglers who were lucky enough to meet pike. On the day one of the
Top young Pike anglers here in the Midlands, Shane Boggs showed how
its done, Shane landed two cracking double figure pike, the best
weighed 24lbs 8oz. In 2nd place was Chris Gallagher 12lbs12oz, 3rd
Barry Darby, 4th Paddy Ward 6lbs 12oz, 5th Alma Hamilton 5lbs 10oz,
6th Ciaran Newman 5lbs.The junior winner was Simon Mc Govern. The
presentation was held in Conor Murtaghs Bar & Lounge Multyfarnham.
On the evening Jimmy Nally thanked all anglers for competing in the
Johnny Owens Perpetual Cup and especially Johnny Owens for
sponsoring such a fantastic Cup.

French
angler Didier Simon reports on his recent trip to Lough
Derg and East Clare lakes
We were a
party of 5 French anglers staying at Padraig
Giblin accommodation on the shores of Lough Derg in
Scarriff bay from the 6th to the 13th of November.
We tried to catch some pike with the "denet archer" with
mackerel, but no result, so we chose to troll
with lures and caught a few pike. One was nearly 12lbs
and 3 fish were close to 8lbs, the others were very small. My friend
Eric who discovered Ireland for the first time, caught a
beautiful pike as can be seen in the photo below. It was nearly
20lbs in weight - 1.08 m long. We caught 25 other small pike on
Lough Bridget trolling with lures. Fishing was very
difficult, we suppose the big pike are in the deep water,
but we didn't have a fish finder to locate the fish.
