Your Best Small Business Idea - Could It Be an MLM?
There are as many proponents of multilevel marketing, a work-from-home small business idea, as there are those adamantly opposed. Just as there are legitimate MLM's and others not so legit. Those who believe in multi level marketing see it as an opportunity for the aspiring entrepreneur, who has little money but a large group of friends and family, to grow an empire - or at least make a great living. Opponents see it as people preying on their friends for the good of no one but themselves.
MLM Small Business - the Basic Idea Behind It
Multi Level Marketing is about substitution advertising, the standard form of getting the word out about a product, with the word-of-mouth efforts of the MLM's independent contractors. These contractors, known as distributors, not only increase their own wealth and the wealth of their company by selling the product to people they know and meet, but also make money by recruiting others to become distributors.
The sponsoring distributor continues to earn residual money from each sale by the distributors now under them, and then by the distributors that distributor brings in as well. Multi Level Marketing firms usually have quite a bit of wealth to spread around to their distributors because they have no brick and mortar overhead costs in the various regions, and they have little advertising or marketing expenses either.
The Plus Side of This Small Business Idea
Those who sing the praises of multi level marketing see it as the American Dream - come from nothing, have nothing, build wealth from nothing but your hard work and determination. All a small business entrepreneur to be needs is an idea, a little bit of money for the start up fee and a few friends. Proponents see it as a chance to make what you're worth instead of slaving at a low wage job while the executives take home the big bucks.
With an MLM the big bucks are yours as a reward for your hard work. The harder you work, the more you make. And, you've got a great product or products to offer, one that benefits your friends and family when you make it available to them. You're doing them a favor letting them know about your goods. That's what the proponents say.
The down Side of This Small Business Idea
Those opposed to multi level marketing see this small business idea as one that exploits friends and family. They see the MLM firm as taking advantage of folks too naive to understand that they are being used as the company's low overhead marketing tool. They often mistake multi level marketing for pyramid schemes, thinking that there is more emphasis on recruiting than on the product itself.
What's important to keep in mind, should you consider multi level marketing or be approached by a distributor who wants to bring you on board, is that you must believe wholeheartedly in the product to succeed. If, as is necessary to start, you attempt to sell to your friends, family and other personal acquaintances, if you're not convinced of the worth of the goods you're selling them, then your business is an exploitation of your personal relationships. And that's surely not what you want.
Investigate the firm thoroughly, try its products yourself to determine their worth and study the contract thoroughly.
