Do a quick Internet search on students and eliminating credit card debt and you'll find a number of studies that reveal just how common credit card debt is amongst college students. It's no wonder, though, most students get their first credit card in high school!

Credit card debt is a national epidemic.

When You Say Eliminate Credit Card Debt, Do You Really Mean Eliminate?

Look at your Internet search results again. See the hundreds of companies telling you they can eliminate your debt? They may be for real but the word "eliminate" is not. The use of "eliminate" in such instance may be just a little misleading. When debt consolidation companies us the word eliminate they don't mean 'get rid of', they mean restructure and pay off slowly.

What a good debt consolidation loan will do for you is help you restructure your various debts into the one sum. But more than that it should result in a reduction of monthly payments and interest charges. This will make repayments more manageable so that you can focus on just one debt repayment per month and increase your cash flow so you can save some money and establish a good monthly budget that you can stick to.

If Debt Consolidation Isn't What You Wanted

If a debt consolidation loan frightens you or your calculator is telling you that it isn't the best solution, then you'll have to go it alone.

Speak to your creditors and inform them that you are slowly going to start tackling your debt. Make a list of what is owning on each credit card. Pick the one with the lowest balance. Start making payments above the minimum monthly payment. Even if you can manage only ten dollars above the monthly payment, that's a very good start. Keep going until the debt is paid in full. Then pick another card. Keep going until you pay it all off. It may be a slow process, but it will happen. Just take one credit card at a time.

Understanding Debt before You Can Eliminate It

What you need to understand before you start tackling your debt problem is how debt is formed. It's simple, really. If you spend more than you can afford then you start building up debt. It builds up much faster than you expect because you're not just paying the money you borrowed but you are also paying interest and other fees.

The first thing you have to do before you can responsibly start your commitment to a credit card debt elimination plan is to stop all over spending. As harsh as it may sound. You just have to stop.

Should I Eliminate My Credit Card Debt by Cutting up My Cards?

Don't cut up your cards. Don't punish yourself. When you get through this you'll want to use your cards again. Trust yourself. You'll have learnt so much in the process of debt elimination that you will be able to responsibly use these cards again. Just put them away in a drawer for now.
