Finding a Way to Work at Home

Finding a Way to Work at Home

Defining "Work at Home"

The idea of working at home is often attractive, but finding a way to make the idea into reality becomes a challenge. The first step is to define "work at home."

There are some companies who hire people to work at home. The employees receive all the benefits of those who clock in at an office. While the regular paycheck and benefits - including insurance and paid holidays and vacation time - are attractive, there may be set hours of worktime and other requirements.

If working for a particular company doesn't meet the goals for the work at home individual, there's always the option of setting up a business and becoming self-employed.

Both options carry their own benefits and limitations, and only the person or family involved can decide which will work for them.

Making a Work at Home Opportunity

Consider hobbies or ideas and think of ways to turn those into a profit. Sometimes, it only takes marketing a particular set of skills or talents to find the right opportunity. Remember the saying, "Make a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door? " That's only true if the world knows you have a better mousetrap. No one will likely knock on your door and ask if you have a better mousetrap. It's up to you to have an idea, but then it's up to you to make that idea available to people who might be interested.

Likewise, there are seldom going to be companies who call and ask you to join their team. Just as you'd be out knocking on doors and submitting resumes for an office or factory position, you'll have to find the jobs you're interested in and apply. The Internet is always a good place to start, but don't overlook family and friends. Sometimes, a tip from a friend can open doors you didn't even know existed.

While the idea of working at home is appealing to many, few have the true desire to make a plan and go into action.

Select a Work at Home Business

Remember that whatever business you begin from home must be something you can imagine doing long term. A dull or taxing job can make you less interested in keeping the business going and making it profitable.

Another consideration are the laws governing your prospective business. If you plan to start keeping children, laws limit the children per adult ratio, the facilities available and care standards. If you plan to walk or board dogs, check for leash laws in your area. In some cities, particular breeds are banned and you could face a fine for housing that breed.

If you plan to market a product of your own invention, consider production costs. It might seem profitable to sell a hand made purse for $20 to a friend when you made it in your spare time, but will that cover the expenses and make a profit when it's your livelihood? Can you get enough materials to mass produce the items? Is there truly a market?

If you plan to market an existing product, check out others who have tried it. Don't depend on company figures to project your income, but seek out people who have succeeded - or failed - with the product.

Once you've decided that you will work at home, it's simply a matter of deciding a course of action.
