Frequently Asked Questions

What is a T-1?
A T-1 is a high-capacity data line that carries 1.5 megabits of data per second. The line is comprised of 24 64K data channels. We use this type of line to deliver up to a 1.5M connection to the Internet.

What is a T-3?
A T-3 is a high-capacity data line that carries 45 megabits of data per second. The line is comprised of 28 1.5M data channels. We use this type of line to deliver up to a 45M connection to the Internet.

I've heard a T-1 referred to as a DS-1. What does this mean?
T-1 lines are frequently referred to as DS-1. DS stands for digital signal, and the number indicates the level of digital signal service. The 64K channels that comprise a T-1 are called DS-0s. The entire T-1 itself is called a DS-1. A T-3, also called a DS-3, is comprised of 28 DS-1s.

Is there anything smaller than a T-1?
Yes. If you don't need a full 1.5M connection, you can order a Fractional T-1. With a Fractional T-1, we install a full T-1 but activate only a fraction of the 24 64K DS-0 channels available. If you need more than a T-1, but less than a Full T-3, we can install a T-3, but activate only a fraction of the 28 1.5M DS-1 channels available. You can upgrade from Fractional to Full service at any time.

What does "Preferred Customer" mean?
If you select a preferred customer T-1 plan you must also change at least one local phone line to our service. This is the only way we can give you the extremely low rate that comes with these plans.

What equipment do I need to use a Dedicated Internet connection?
You need a router and DSU/CSU. For T-1, you need a router that is capable of PPP, Frame Relay, and ATM protocols that has a v.35 serial connection for an external DSU/CSU or has a T-1 DSU/CSU built-in. For T-3, ask your sales representative.

What is a DSU/CSU?
DSU/CSU stands for Data Service Unit/Channel Service Unit. It is the device that understands how to read the 64K data channels on T-1 lines and 1.5M data channels on T-3 lines. Think of it as modem for T-1 and T-3 lines. Some routers will have the DSU/CSU built in while others use an external unit connected with a cable. A DSU/CSU made for T-1 will not work on a T-3 and vice-versa.

How many IP addresses do I get?
Our IP allocation policy varies by plan. At a minimum, 8 IP addresses are provided at no charge, and in many cases, even more. Ask your sales representative for more information.

Can I run servers through the connection?
Yes. You can run your own DNS, Mail, Web, FTP, and all other types of servers through the connection.
