Avg. Customer Review:
Works well for most users Claritin is a good choice for those who suffer with mild to moderate allergies. However ... if you have sinus trouble, you'll need Claritin-D, which also contains loratadine (antihistamine) with an added kick of pseudoephedrine (decongestant), the same type found in Sudafed. Claritin-D will kick your budget in the pants (around [$] for 5 pills), and is only available OTC now (I tried asking my DR. for a perscription, hoping to get more pills for my money- no dice). Those who are sensitive to medications may experience slight drowsiness from the antihistamine, but unless you take more than the recommended dose (once a day), you shouldn't experience any problems. We've also used Claritin for a really horrendous bug bite reaction- redness and swelling went down significantly within 2 hours (it should be noted, however, that in a life threatening emergency, bad bug bite reactions should go straight to the ER- an oral dose won't work as fast as a shot or IV). Children's Claritin (liquid form) is great too, has a syrupy sweetness that's supposed to taste like "fruit" (do they ever?), but is clear (won't stain clothes) and the kids don't protest too much.
Avoid, unless you have established success with it. It will help control allergies, but sinus sufferers looking to decongest-dry out must seek the Claritin-D formulation instead. This is effective, but pricey. Generics are almost equal, but a word about generics: they use the basic drug formula, but are free to use any delivery additives they wish. Those additives do change how it reacts in your body, for some people. I would recommend Claritin and not a knockoff for precisely that reason. Fred
