Softball's Cinderella Run ends in PBC tournament

2004Alcira_Adriatico.jpg (14017 bytes)SPARTANBURG----The No. 11-seeded Lander softball team’s Cinderella run in the Peach Belt Conference Softball Tournament came to an end Saturday when the Bearcats were eliminated by USC Spartanburg, 3-1, at the 295 Sports Complex. (Boxscores)

Lander, which lost to USCS in the opening game of the tournament, 9-3, opened Saturday’s round with a 4-0 win over No. 8 USC Aiken then downed No. 5 Georgia College & State University, 4-3, in eight innings. Alcira Adriatico (pictured) was selected for the PBC All-Tournament team.

The Bearcats end the season 30-31 overall.

Against USCS on Saturday, Lander was down 3-0 after the Lady Rifles scored solo runs in the first three innings. Lander scored its only run when Keri Davis sent a solo home run over the left field fence in the seventh inning.

Sarah Permenter (19-12) took the loss, striking out four, walking one and allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in two innings pitched. Sheena Mason relieved Permenter and struck out one, walked three and allowed one earned run on four hits in four innings. USCS’s Kasey Heron (12-3) earned the win, striking out four, walking one and allowing one earned run on four hits in 6.1 innings. Jennifer Whited got the save in the final 2/3 of an inning.

Davis went 2-for-4 with one RBI and Alicira Adriatico went 2-for-4.

USCS’s Terra Goswick went 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead the Rifles.

Against Georgia College, freshman Sydney Sneed belted a solo homerun in the top of the eighth inning to hand the Bearcats the victory. Mason and Permenter combined for a five-hitter. Permenter (19-11), who relieved Mason in the fifth, earned the victory, striking out three, walking two and allowing one run (unearned) on three hits. Mason struck out three, walked eight and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits in four innings.

GC&SU’s Tara Hassell (5-6) was the loser, striking out nine, walking one and allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits in the full eight innings.

Lander racked up three runs in the fifth inning. Tracy Cumalander doubled then went to third when Heather Bishop reached on a third base error. Summer Kimmel singled in Cumalander. Alcira Adriatico then singled in Kimmel and Bishop.

Georgia College scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and tied the game in the seventh.

Lander’s Sneed went 2-for-3 with one homerun and Cumalander went 1-for-4 with one double. Kimmel went 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Against USC Aiken, which ends the season at 31-29, Sarah Permenter (18-11) earned the victory, striking out five, walking one and allowing three hits in the seven-inning, complete-game shutout. USCA’s JoAnn Jones (13-13) was the loser, striking out six and allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits.

Lander took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Summer Kimmel singled advanced to third on a throwing error by Jones and scored on a sacrifice fly by Melissa Ryals. The Bearcats stretched the margin to 3-0 in the sixth. Alcira Adriatico smacked a solo home run over the right field fence to lead off the inning then Jennifer Dickert singled in Keri Davis.

The final run came in the top of the seventh when Summer Kimmel doubled and went home on a Ashlea Burdette single.

Adriatico went 2-for-4 with one homerun and one RBI, Dickert 3-for-3 with one RBI and Kimmel went 2-for-4 with one double.

USCA’s Meghan Lynch went 2-for-3.
