File Recovery - Lost System Files
While it can be an inconvenience to need to recover any kind of data file, the requirement for recovery of lost system files can be debilitating.
Data File Recovery is a Comparatively Easy Process.
There are scores of software programs designed specifically to recover data files that have suffered either virus attack, accidental deletion or some other form of corruption that has rendered them inaccessible. In the majority of cases, using any of these programs will be enough to retrieve a lot of information that had initially been deemed as "lost."
Those programs written for data file recovery have usually been created with specific applications in mind. Therefore it is not uncommon to find file recovery programs written expressly for Microsoft Word, or Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Access.
System File Recovery is a Tricky Procedure.
In cases where the information of a data file has been corrupted a user invariably has the resources of the rest of the computer's operating system close to hand. Even without software specifically tailored for the process of file recovery, it is possible to use of of the pre-installed routines that can either undelete a file or execute some other form of recovery.
But, when a system file has been damaged, or corrupted, the operating system becomes unstable and accessing these programs may not be an option. In some cases, if the corruption has occurred in a file that is integral to booting up, the system may not start correctly and recovery starts to look less and less likely.
System File Recovery is Possible.
In these circumstances a user will have resort to booting from a valid system disk or boot disk. This option will facilitate a temporary boot where appropriate reparation can be made to the damaged system file. There is a great chance that, rather than being able to execute a file recovery, these circumstances might mean going back to an earlier backup of a valid system file. But, if there have been no major changes to an operating system, this should not cause such a great inconvenience.
Some programming tools are available that would allow recovery of damaged files in these circumstances but, because they work on the operating system in a limited capacity, the user interface is distinctly unfriendly and operation of these programs should really be left to those experts who fully understand the potential ramifications of each decision they make. The files that control a computer's operating system are too important to be trifled with.
Although data file recovery is easier than system file recovery, both types of file can eventually be recovered and the smooth operation of a computer can eventually continue. However, it is always wisest to make sure all important information is backed up at regular intervals and appropriate measures have been taken to guard against the dangers of suffering file corruption or file damage. Anti-virus programs, routine maintenance of the PC's software and hardware, and sensible precautions with storage media should keep the majority of information safe and secure from this type of problem.
