Here are some questions and things to keep in mind: 1) Ask who the maker of the program is and how long they have been in business, 2) Ask if the program is user friendly, 3) Ask if the program requires periodic updates via the internet, 3)Ask if there is an 800 or customer service program that you can call should you run into any problems, 4) Ask about your vendors return policy, 5) Ask if there is a warranty or guarantee that comes with the program and if you can buy an extended warranty, 6) Make sure that the program is compatible with your computer and other computer linked media or units (PDA's for example, that are synced into your computer, 6) Make sure that the program you are buying is up to date and does not require an immediate update to correct for errors, 7)Ask the sales person to compare the program you are purchasing to other similar competitive programs, 8) Always purchase unused software 9)Ask if your personal information stored in your computer may be compromised if the program requires updates via the internet

If you are not comfortable with asking your local vendor to suggest a data recovery program there are other sources that you can go to. Call the maker of your computer for their suggestion. The maker of your computer will best know what type of program works best with your computer. OR, you can ask your works IT person to suggest a program that they use at work. You may also want to flip through consumer magazines that list the top ten data recovery programs available.
As always, the internet is a great guide to some of the best selling data recovery programs. Take advantage of internet sites of data recovery companies and send them an e-mail with all of your questions and concerns.
