Here are some tips to help you search more effectively with the Advanced Search form:

To search locally include a State or ZIP Code.
- To search in more than one state, separate the state names with commas.
- To search in more than one ZIP Code, separate the ZIP Codes with commas.
Narrow your search by using a City or ZIP Code with a state.
- Enter one or more city names, separating multiple names with commas.
- For big cities, a ZIP Code narrows down the search better than a city name.
To search throughout a metropolitan area, enter one or more telephone area codes plus a state.
- For example, to search in and around Boston, enter 617, 508, 781, 978.
- Enter the area code(s) in the first field after Phone, separating multiple area codes with commas.
  - More can fit into the field than can be seen. As you enter digits, previously entered digits will scroll out of view, but you can use the cursor keys to see them again.

Don't abbreviate. Enter an address such as 5 E. Main St. as 5 East Main Street. U.S. Postal Service 2-letter state codes may be used in the State field, however. When searching with a Business Name, you are more likely to find matching listings if you omit words like Company and Incorporated and function words like and.

Use multiple Keyword terms, ZIP Codes, or Phone Numbers:
- Separate multiple words or numbers with spaces if you want the search results to contain all the words or numbers.
  - e.g., furniture retail matches only those categories that contain both words.
- Separate multiple words or numbers with commas if you want the results to contain any of the words or numbers.
  - e.g., entering the ZIP Codes 06880, 02109 matches listings in either area.

What to do if no matching listings are found

There are several reasons why no matching listings may be found even when you have reason to believe there probably are some listings:

The keyword you typed may not be recognized. Try again using a different word to describe the type of business. You can also click on the Browse Categories link to select from a hierarchy of over 800 common categories.
Something may have been misspelled. Check for spelling mistakes and search again.
Abbreviations are not recognized by the service, so be sure that all words are spelled out in full and then search again.
