THE UNITED KINGDOM IS LOCATED OFF THE NORTHWEST COAST OF EUROPE, COVERING AN AREA OF 244,100SQ KM. THE ATLANTIC OCEAN SURROUNDS THIS ISLAND. THE UNTIED KINGDOM'S TERRAIN MAY BE SPLIT UP EVENLY INTO LOWLANDS AND UPLANDS. ENGLAND HAS THREE MAJOR HILL AREAS, REACHING ABOVE 914M IN THE WEST, SOUTHWEST AND NORTH, WHILE THERE ARE TWO LOWLAND AREAS BELOW 305M TO THE EAST AND SOUTHEAST. THE PENNINE RANGE RUNS FROM NORTH TO SOUTH, AND INCLUDES SCAFELL PIKE AT 978M. SCAFELL PIKE IS THE HIGHEST POINT IN ENGLAND. THE TWO PRINCIPAL RIVERS ARE THE THAMES AND THE SEVERN. SCOTLAND MAY BE DIVIDED INTO THREE GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS. THE FIRST BEING THE NORTHERN HIGHLANDS. HERE LIES THE GREAT BEN NEVIS, THE HIGHEST POINT IN THE UNITED KINGDOM AT 1342M. THE CENTRAL LOWLANDS REACHING ABOVE 152M AND THE SOUTHERN UPLANDS RISING TO A HEIGHT OF 853M. THREE OF THE MAIN RIVERS ARE THE CLYDE, SPEY AND THE TWEED. WALES IS COVERED MOSTLY BY THE CAMBRIAN MOUNTAINS. AT 1085M, LIES MOUNT SNOWDOWN, WALES HIGHEST PEAK. THE PRINCIPAL RIVERS ARE THE DEE, TYWI AND THE TEIFI. NORTHERN IRELAND IS MADE UP OF LOWLANDS AND HILLS NEVER RISING ABOVE 183M. IT ALSO IS THE HOME OF THE UNITED KINGDOM'S LARGEST LAKE AT 400 SQ. KM, LOUGH NEAGH. THE FOYLE, BANN AND THE ERNE ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT RIVERS.
