In the past decade, metro Atlanta has experienced tremendous growth
and prosperity, adding almost 1 million people to the 13 county region*.
However, that same growth now threatens to compromise our quality
of life and regional economic competitiveness.
Longer commutes make it harder to recruit and retain employees.
Stress and time lost in traffic can cut productivity. Employee health
problems increase absenteeism and can push health care costs through
the roof.
Poor air quality, longer commutes and increasing traffic congestion
can also stifle economic growth. These problems have the potential
to limit corporate relocations and commercial expansions, which
could negatively impact employment and housing values.
Additionally, failure to adequately address the air pollution problem
could result in restrictions on our ability to use federal transportation
money. This could exacerbate an already worsening traffic congestion
problem.
The Clean Air Campaign and the region’s eight transportation management associations can help. How? By helping employers put programs in place that reduce traffic congestion. And ultimately improve air quality.
