Science and technology
A wide range of jobs are possible - researching, developing
and delivering weather and environmental information to our
customers.
- Improving the numerical models that are the core of
our forecasting products
- Investigating climate change and understanding atmospheric
processes, the oceans and our natural environment
- Developing and managing our extensive range of communications,
remote sensing and computing resources
Example jobs: Forecaster, Physical scientist, Research
scientists, Microwave instrument scientists.

Information technology
We also need experts in a diverse range of IT-based work,
such as:
- Workstation support
- Internet and intranet development
- Software development
Example jobs: IT product developer, Unix team member,

Specialist work

Mobile Met. Unit (MMU) - frontline support
The MMU is a unit of Met Office forecasters who are commissioned
as reserve officers in the Royal Air Force.
They provide frontline meteorological support to our armed
forces, and those of other nations in joint operations, on deployment
throughout the world.
Example jobs: MMU forecaster, MMU engineer.

Other areas of work

Example jobs: Personal assistant, Sales contracts administrator,
Admin assistant, Customer Centre advisor, HR assistant.

Forecasting/research and development
- first or upper second-class degree in mathematics,
the physical sciences, computer science or meteorology
- good 'A' levels in Maths and/or Physics
- five GCSEs or equivalent, one of which must be English
Language
- an interest in meteorology (but training is provided
for all new staff)

|
Mobile Met. Unit (MMU) forecasters/engineers
- minimum of two 'A' levels, or equivalent, including
Maths and/or Physics at grade C or above
- five GCSEs or equivalent, including Maths and English
Language at grade C or above
- full driving licence
- able to meet specified medical and fitness standards
- MMU Engineers will also have a degree in engineering
or allied science or, exceptionally, an HND in Electrical/Electronic
Engineering, plus several years' proven experience in
a variety of engineering disciplines

Human resources/Finance/Property management/Marketing
and Sales/IT
- five GCSEs or equivalent, one of which must be English
Language
- appropriate experience/qualifications in the relevant
field

|
Support services
- posts usually require a minimum of five GCSEs or equivalent,
one of which must be English Language
- relevant experience preferred
|
|
|
|
|
