Nursing Home Term Care and Care Givers.
Patients who are suffering from dementia and for whom the people who are entrusted with the task of sending these patients to nursing home for term care shows them to be severely stressed themselves because the final say to commit such patients to nursing home for long term care rests upon them, they are known to suffer from deep rooted fears and are generally depressed and in fact suffer extremely due to the fact that taking such a decision rests heavily upon their shoulders.
In a study undertaken by the National Institute of Nursing Research and the National Institute on Aging these facts have come to light. These people who are the care givers of dementia patients are known to require clinical treatment themselves in order to enable them to cope with the onerous task of sending their near and dear ones to nursing home for term care. They are themselves the victims of depressed moods and have a lot of anxious moments thereafter.
Nursing Home Term Care and Care Givers.
Persons responsible for sending their relatives to a nursing home for long term care, contrary to expectations, do not get the feeling of having been relieved of the task, but go into a state of depression Because they experience their loved and near and dear ones going through difficult times, it leads them into not feeling better themselves and consequently are in need of some relief themselves.
In addition, the need for commuting to the nursing home that provides for long term care for their relatives and being in charge of and taking the responsibility of handling their care has weighed them down. This may be due to the fact that people committed to nursing homes for term care are not in control of their body functions and may have difficulties in cognition and that this disability makes care givers take this disability to heart.
Spouses of patients as well as those relatives who often visit the patients have to undergo a tough and testing time due to the change of circumstances. The occurrence of depressed feelings and anxious moods among spouses of patients are reported to be getting higher both prior to and after placing the patient to institutions for term care. This is not seen so much in other care givers who are not the spouse of the patient. Among the other facts known about care givers is the fact they are also seeing the patients everyday as well as doing the physical task of providing care to the patients.
Nursing Home Term Care and the Racial Divide.
Research has found that on an average white care givers were more prone to commit the patient to nursing homes for long term care. African American and the people of Hispanic descent were less likely to send their patients to nursing homes for term care, being much more prone to taking care of the patients themselves. Also, in case the treatment required by the patient is of a grave nature, care givers are likely to commit the patient to institutions for long term care.
On the other hand, if the care giver felt that he or she was in a position to offer adequate care and thus feel important, then they were less likely to commit the patient for term care. American care givers are in need of help in coping with the trauma following the sending of their relatives to nursing homes for term care.
But in the end one must not forget that aged people need skilled help for the kind of problems they inevitably face. Alzhimers, Parkinson, heart attacks, weak muscles, joint problems are only to name a few. A daily routine chalked out by nursing homes are very important. Lets not forget, man is a social animal and interaction with others is very important no matter what age. Our parents and grand parents need the best care and sometimes it is not possible for a family to work, earn money for the family as well as take care of their elders.
