Backup Online with Free Software

Backup software has taken a nose-dive in price, it's free! Backup of data is the number one most important task of any IT department. Its necessity is due to the central role it plays in any modern business. By now everyone with a computer has experienced the loss of data through deletion or hard drive crash. It's not fun to deal, so imagine a large enterprise with 24/7 requirements on data going down during a disastrous event and there is no backup or the backup is weeks old.

What might happen in an instance such as this? The business will probably fail, the customer's data loss may result in lawsuits, and all those employees are suddenly without jobs.

Free Backup Software is Available

One of the latest backup options is online backup. Most backup services offer their basic software for free. That's right, free. It is a common practice to offer the software for free. The backup software enables the customer to connect with the online backup service, authenticate the user, encrypt the backup data, and upload the latest backup for free. The customer, that's you, pays a monthly service fee to store the data.

The whole process, without the free software, is like purchasing a storage unit to store your household items. You are paying for the actual storage space and not necessarily for the process of entry. Online storage is similar and the free backup software is the key you are using to open your storage unit to retrieve your data.

Test Your Free Backup Software

When shopping for and researching the online backup services available to you, you will be introduced to the free software the service makes available. Some services can only run their backup process with the software they offer. Other services may be able to accommodate your business by accepting the software you might already have in place. Check with the service about the free software before committing to anyone.

Once you have begun an open dialog with the online backup service you will have the opportunity to see into the service a little deeper. Ask to test the free software they offer. You will be looking for compatibility with your existing operating system and IT backup procedures. Most services should allow you to test the software before the actual purchase of the service. After all, they want you to be happy with your choice and if the free software is not adequate for your system then there is no other choice for you but to find other software or move on.

Free Backup Software and Security

Outside of the free backup software being compatible with your operating system and business procedures, there are some security requirements that the software must have. In order to secure your data from the possibility of theft or hacking, the software must use an authentication method to identify the user requesting the upload or download and that person's authority to do so. The software will also need to use encryption as a way of securing the actual data.

Make sure the encryption key stays with you and is not available to the service company or anyone within your own company that is not authorized to have it.
